NPR combining news stories, live theatre for new event series in DC, NYC and other cities
WASHINGTON – NPR is combining its news coverage with theatre for a new series of live events across the country.
The first production “Water +/-” uses local and national storytelling about how too much or too little water affects communities. Stories are combined with music, poetry, visual projections and acting to create a theatrical production.
The show premiered last month in New Orleans. It debuts in Washington on Saturday at the Newseum and in New York on Monday. Shows are also scheduled this month with NPR’s member stations in San Francisco, Seattle, Atlanta, Cleveland and Detroit.
Tony Award-winning director Kenny Leon is working with NPR’s science correspondent and theatre writers and actors to create the show.
NPR says it hopes the new event series will help generate revenue for the non-profit service.
