Bicyclist struck down in Penticton early morning hit and run

PENTICTON – Penticton RCMP are investigating an early morning hit and run involving a cyclist over the weekend.

Penticton RCMP received multiple 911calls from residents in the 200 block of Elm Avenue near Skaha Lake Park around 4:25 a.m. July 21.

The officers arrived on scene near the beach area on Skaha Lake where they found a man who was suffering from a serious lower body injury.

Police were told the man had been cycling in the area when he was allegedly struck by a red Dodge dually pickup truck.

Witnesses said the truck veered off the travel portion of the roadway, onto the grass prior to fleeing eastbound from the scene towards South Main Street.

The cyclist was transported by B.C. Ambulance to hospital where he was treated for injuries not believed to be life-threatening.

"As a result of the continued investigation, police have since recovered a vehicle they believe to be involved in the hit and run, which is being considered an isolated event at this time,” RCMP police spokesperson Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey said. “A collision analyst and reconstructionist examined the scene, while forensic specialists are expected to examine the suspect vehicle, as police continue to probe the circumstances surrounding this incident.”

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash and have not spoken to police are asked to call Penticton RCMP at 250-492-4300, or call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
