
Kamloops athletes set records and win eight medals in Toronto competition
KAMLOOPS – Two Kamloops athletes will bring home eight medals between them after competing against approximately 1,100 competitors from 32 countries.
Sunette Lessing and Dwight Liburd competed in the 2019 North and Central America and Caribbean Region of World Masters Athletics in Toronto from July 18 to 21. Kamloops Track and Field Club shared the statistics on their Facebook page.
According to the post, Lessing, who competed in the 50 to 54 age range, set a Canadian record and took home the gold for her 4.67-metre long jump. She also took home the gold for her high jump, reaching a height of 1.45 metres. Lessing set a B.C. record and took home silver for her placement in the women’s pentathlon. She also nabbed a bronze medal after completing the 80 metres hurdle race in 14.02 seconds.
Liburd competed in the category for males aged 35 to 39. He brought home a gold medal for his long jump of 6.25 metres and set a B.C. record at the same time. He also set a provincial record and brought in a gold medal for his triple jump distance of 12.13 metres. Liburd got a silver in the 4 x 100 relay and won bronze in a close 100 metres race with a time of 11.22 seconds.
Both athletes are expected to return to Toronto next year to take part in the games.
