Top German court to rule in January on far-right party ban

BERLIN – Germany’s highest court says it will announce its verdict on a bid to outlaw the country’s biggest far-right party on Jan. 17.

Officials accuse the National Democratic Party of promoting a racist and anti-Semitic agenda. It’s the second attempt to secure a ban, which would be the first of its kind in 60 years.

The Federal constitutional Court announced the date for its ruling on Thursday. The court held hearings in March on the bid by the German parliament’s upper house, which represents the country’s 16 state governments, to ban the party.

The party has one lawmaker in the European Parliament but isn’t represented in Germany’s national parliament. It lost its last seats in a state legislature when the northeastern state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania held an election two months ago.
