Theatrical sound design Tony Award snub to be reviewed by rules committee

NEW YORK, N.Y. – A Tony Award committee will look into the decision earlier this year to scrap the handing out of awards for best sound design.
The decision to drop the honours for Best Sound Design of a Play and Best Sound Design of a Musical was made in June by the Tony Awards Administration Committee, and it set off outrage among some theatre professionals.
An online petition was launched that drew 32,495 signatures, including theatre icon Stephen Sondheim, directors and choreographers Susan Stroman and Debbie Allen, directors Des McAnuff and David Leveaux, playwright Jon Robin Baitz, songwriter Cyndi Lauper and composer and performer Lin-Manuel Miranda.
In a statement Thursday, the administration committee said it “stands by” its “carefully studied decision” but “has referred the request of the sound design community to the Rules Committee for further review.”
The sound awards, which were first handed out in 2008, honour those who create sound effects and create soundscapes for musicals and plays.
