Penticton town hall meeting to discuss Green New Deal

PENTICTON – The Green New Deal tour is making a pitch in Penticton later this week.

Local Member of Parliament Richard Cannings will host the Green New Deal Tour at a town hall meeting along with MP Peter Julian, who put forward a motion in parliament for a green new deal, according to a media release. The motion is a call for government-led investments aimed at stopping climate change and income inequality.

Through public investments in renewable energy, building retrofits and electric vehicles, the aim is to drastically reduce carbon emissions while creating well-paying, union jobs at the same time, the release states.

“We are at a critical moment – we must act now, and we must act boldly. It is a time when we all have to face the climate crisis for what it is- a crisis- and work together across borders and across party lines. The Green New Deal is a chance to tackle these issues of our time,” Cannings said in the release.

The town hall meeting complements such local Penticton movements as “First Things First Okanagan” and “Penticton Rising.”

It is scheduled to take place at the Penticton Public Library auditorium on Thursday, Aug. 1 from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
