Pakistani PM Sharif returns home after cardiac surgery

LAHORE, Pakistan – A spokesman says Pakistan’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has returned home 48 days after he underwent cardiac surgery in London.

Mohiuddin Wani says Sharif landed Saturday in his hometown of Lahore where he went straight to his rural compound to see his family.

Details of the surgery involved or Sharif’s original ailment were never disclosed.

Sharif had left Pakistan among opposition calls that he resign because family members were named as holders of offshore bank accounts, according to documents leaked from the Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca.

Sharif has said he is ready to face investigation, and defended his financial record in a speech in parliament.

Pakistan’s main opposition parties have said that they will start a fresh campaign against the premier to pressure him to resign.
