Centre Hassan Whiteside gives Heat early injury scare but returns to action

TORONTO – The Miami Heat had a scare early Tuesday night when centre Hassan Whiteside went down clutching his knee in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinal against the Toronto Raptors.

The seven-footer appeared to slip as he tried to haul in a pass slightly behind him with Raptors big man Jonas Valanciunas looming. Whiteside grabbed his right knee in pain as he went down awkwardly near the Toronto basket with 4:54 remaining in the first quarter. He had two points at the time.

After spending some time on the floor, he made it to the bench and then the Miami locker-room on his own steam.

The early word was a right knee strain, but the Heat centre was back in action early in the second quarter.

Whiteside’s 24 blocks in the first round against Charlotte erased Alonzo Mourning’s club record of 21 for a seven-game series.
