Summer staples: Peach Bin Race launches 2019 Peach Festival

PENTICTON – The 5th annual Peach Bin Races ran in the 100 block of Main Street in Penticton Wednesday afternoon, signalling the start to this year’s Peach Festival.

Gyro Park was already busy with the Rona Kids Zone before hundreds of spectators lined the street for what has become the annual kickoff event to Peachfest.

RCMP Cpl. Don Wrigglesworth returned in red serge, acting as master of ceremonies for the event, which consisted of teams from Greyback Construction, the visiting Snowbirds Air Demonstration squadron, the BP Wood “Lumber Rumblers,” Nature’s Fare Markets, the Penticton Fire Department and the family team of Tate BEE Lun.

A total of a dozen heats were run before Wrigglesworth announced the Snowbirds team winners for 2019.

And heats they were, with most teams in a free sweat from the plus 30 Celsius noonday sun after a short run from the Gyro Park access road to the corner of Main and Lakeshore Drive and back.

The Lumber Rumblers dropped out due to “technical difficulties” at one point, only to get back into the race when the fire department offered their peach bin after they were eliminated.

Even the Snowbirds had some technical issues, but a cordless drill and a few screws were all they needed to get back on the winning track.

Top three finishers included the Snowbirds (first), Greyback (second) and the Tate BEE Lun team (third).

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
