A 13th death from legionnaires’ disease in Quebec City

QUEBEC – A 13th person has died from legionnaires’ disease in Quebec City.

The person fell ill on Aug. 29 — the last date on which any new case was reported.

Public-health authorities say the illness has since been brought under control because they have disinfected the cooling systems in more than 100 buildings.

The deadly bacteria grows in the stagnant water of cooling systems and spreads in little droplets through air conditioning.

The outbreak has led to 177 recorded cases of the illness, the last being two weeks ago.

An investigation is looking into the specific source, or sources, of the outbreak. The findings are not expected before mid-October.
