Search for firearms leads mounties to Lumby grow-op

LUMBY – Police went looking for illegal firearms at a Lumby residence earlier this month and turned up what they call a dangerous, albeit legally licensed marijuana grow-op instead.

Lumby Cpl. Henry Proce said police executed a search warrant Dec. 12 at a residence in the 1700 block of Grandview Avenue looking for firearms.

The weapons weren’t located but a licensed marijuana grow operation was confirmed to be in the house.

Police subsequently had safety and fire inspectors visit the scene because the electrical wiring presented a fire hazard to the home and potentially those nearby, Proce said.

“Due to safety concerns, efforts are underway to cut off power to the home until the homeowner makes it safe,” Proce said. “Properly licensed grow -ops within residences continue to be legal pending a court decision and is an issue our officers deal with on a regular basis.”
