Canadiens’ Emelin fined more than $11,000 for illegal check to the head of Sabres’ Gionta

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Montreal Canadiens defenceman Alexei Emelin has been fined $11,021.51 by the league for an illegal check to the head of Buffalo Sabres forward Brian Gionta.

The fine is the maximum permitted under the collective bargaining agreement.

The incident occurred at 18:06 of the third period of a 2-1 win by the Sabres on Friday. Emelin was assessed a minor penalty for an illegal check to the head.
