‘Divergent’ author Veronica Roth promotes holiday book donations

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Veronica Roth is in a giving mood: The multimillion-selling young adult author is backing a holiday season campaign that supports First Book, which over the years has distributed millions of works to children in need.

For every $2.50 given to First Book, publisher HarperCollins will donate a copy of Roth’s “Divergent.” The fundraising effort was announced Monday.

The campaign has the hashtag #abnegationDonation.

“Reading is such a huge part of my life and there are so many kids who don’t have access to books,” Roth said during a recent telephone interview with The Associated Press. “I felt like it was time to get involved with some kind of organization that donates books and First Book is excellent.”

Roth, 26, has been busy over the past year, promoting her “Divergent” trilogy and the first “Divergent” movie, which starred Shailene Woodley. She has no plans to tour for the First Book promotion but expects to be active on social media.

She is not ready to discuss any future books.

“It’s been a wonderful year and it’s time to take a break,” she said.
