Blue Jays decline to offer contracts to Andy Dirks, John Mayberry Jr and Justin Smoak
TORONTO – The Blue Jays declined to offer contracts to outfielders Andy Dirks and John Mayberry Jr., and first baseman Justin Smoak before Tuesday’s midnight deadline, making them free agents.
Dirks was claimed off waivers from Detroit on Oct. 31, three days after Smoak was claimed from Seattle. On Nov. 1, Toronto declined Smoak’s $3.65 million option.
Dirks missed the 2014 season with back and hamstring injuries, while Smoak batted .202 with seven homers and 30 RBIs in 80 games with the Mariners.
Mayberry was acquired from Philadelphia on Aug. 31 and hit .208 with one homer and two RBIs in 15 games with the Blue Jays.
Toronto offered contracts to four arbitration-eligible players: left-hander Brett Cecil, newly acquired third baseman Josh Donaldson, right-hander Marco Estrada and infielder Danny Valencia.
