Military: 2 ranking members of Nigeria radical Islamist sect killed by soldiers at checkpoint

KANO, Nigeria – A military official in Nigeria says two ranking members of a radical Islamist sect have been killed by soldiers near the northern city of Kano.

The official said the spokesman for the sect known as Boko Haram, as well as a commander for its members in Kogi state, were shot to death at a checkpoint Monday morning at Mariri outside of Kano. The official said the men had come to Kano to seek medical attention for the spokesman’s wife.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity as the information was not to be made immediately public.

Boko Haram, which typically speaks to journalists in telephone calls at times of its choosing, could not be reached.

The shooting comes as 10 people were killed in violence Sunday blamed on the group.
