KELOWNA – Keeping the homes and boats on Okanagan Lake safe is the goal of a brand new boathouse in Killiney Beach Community Park.

The $78,000 waterfront building, dock and marine lift just off Hodges Road will house the North Westside Fire Rescue department’s Marine Mobile Water Supply and Fireboat.

Just over $20,000 came from the North Westside Firefighter Society, with the rest from the Regional District of the Central Okanagan.

Members of the community and government officials gathered in the cold and wind Saturday morning to officially open the boathouse.

During the ceremony, members of the Society recognized the memory of Regan Toker. He’s a member of the Fire Department who lost his life in a West Kelowna workplace accident in 2011. The facility will be called Regan Toker Memorial Boathouse.

Construction of the boathouse and dock finished earlier this fall.

It includes an electric boatlift and gasoline powered generator for the lights and the electric motor that runs the garage door.

North Westside Fire Chief Doug Gardiner says the fireboat is now easily accessible for their volunteers when it’s dispatched to fight a fire or to rescue boaters.
