Sting to stick around onstage in his Broadway musical ‘The Last Ship’ until Jan. 24

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Sting plans to stay aboard his musical “The Last Ship” for longer than expected.

Producers said Thursday that the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter will extend his stay in the show until Jan. 24, two weeks longer than his original announced run. He jumped into the show Tuesday night, playing a shipyard foreman.

“The Last Ship” is a semiautobiographical story about a prodigal son who returns to his northern England shipbuilding town to reclaim the girl he abandoned when he fled years before. He finds the workers are now unemployed and entertaining the idea of building one last boat to show off their skill and pride.

The show, with no bankable stars until now, has struggled at the box office, attributable in part to its challenging topic.
