Police in Virginia fatally shoot woman armed with knife
LYNCHBURG, Va. – Virginia authorities say a police officer shot and killed a woman who approached officers wielding a knife.
The Lynchburg police department said in a statement that police received a call from someone late Sunday who said the woman was suicidal, had a knife, and had hurt herself.
Police say the woman was barricaded in a room and that negotiators worked for several hours to resolve the situation peacefully.
The statement said the woman came out of the room early Monday and approached police in a threatening manner while holding the knife.
Authorities say officers shocked the woman with a stun gun, but she continued to move toward them. The woman was shot and died at the scene. Virginia State Police are investigating.
