RCMP seek witnesses after suspected drunk driver crashes car, flees on foot

VERNON – RCMP are looking for witnesses after a suspected drunk driver crashed a car into a hydro pole and then fled from police on foot.

According to Vernon North Okanagan RCMP media release at around 5:20 a.m. Aug. 29 emergency services responded to a report of a single-vehicle collision in the BX area of Vernon. Crews found a Blue Mazda at 39 Avenue and Mutrie Road that had crashed into a utility pole and sustained extensive front end damage.

"One of our responding officers located a male and female walking in the area minutes after the incident occurred who were believed impaired by alcohol and involved in the collision. The officer detained both parties, for further investigation, however, the suspect male resisted arrest and fled on foot. The female was cooperative and remained on scene," Vernon RCMP media liaison officer Const. Kelly Brett said in the release. "An extensive search for the male was conducted with the assistance of the K9 Unit and multiple front line officers, however, he was not located."

RCMP has identified the man who fled on foot as a 30-year-old Vernon man and is continuing to investigate.
