Final long weekend of summer in Okanagan looking good weather-wise

OKANAGAN – Mainly sunny skies and above-average temperatures are in store for the Okanagan over the Labour Day long weekend.

Environment Canada meteorologist Doug Lundquist says the current ridge of high pressure over the region is expected to weaken a bit over the weekend, bringing a 30 to 40 per cent possibility of showers, mainly at higher elevations. Temperatures are expected to dip on Labour Day Monday to more seasonal norms before rebounding on Tuesday.

This afternoon, Aug. 29, residents of the Okanagan can expect a mix of sun and cloud. Winds are expected to become northerly at 20 km/h late in the day with a high of 30 Celsius in Vernon, a high of 31 C in Kelowna and a high of 32 C in Penticton. It should be partly cloudy with a low of 14 C overnight.

Tomorrow should see a mix of sun and cloud with a 30 per cent chance of afternoon showers in Vernon, and a 40 per cent chance of showers for Kelowna and Penticton. Winds should shift southwest at 20 km/h with a high of 29 C and an overnight low of 15 C, along with a 40 per cent chance of showers continuing overnight.

On Saturday, expect a sun and cloud mix with a high of 30 C. Saturday night could see cloudy periods along with a 30 per cent chance of showers and a low of 15 C.

The forecast calls for a 30 per cent chance of showers on Sunday with a mix of sun and clouds and a high of 29 C. Overnight, a 30 per cent chance of showers remains, along with a low of 12 C.

Labour Day Monday should see a mix of sun and cloud with a high of 24 C. The skies should clear Monday night with a low of 12 C, giving way to sunny skies and a high temperature of 27 C on Tuesday.

The normal temperatures in the Okanagan at this time of year are highs of 24 C and lows of 9 C.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014.
