Edward Hopper autumnal painting going to NYC auction, where it could fetch as much as $12M

NEW YORK, N.Y. – A painting of a Cape Cod autumn scene by Edward Hopper is coming to a New York City auction, where it’s expected to fetch as much as $12 million.

Christie’s says “October on Cape Cod” is one of the last paintings by the American artist to remain in private hands.

It will be offered for sale on Nov. 28, coinciding with a major retrospective of Hopper’s work in Paris.

The large-scale painting shows a house and small barn from across a road as it might be observed from a passing vehicle.

Cape Cod figures strongly in Hopper’s iconography because he spent nearly every summer there after 1930.

The auction record for a Hopper is $26.8 million for the painting “Hotel Window.”

He died in 1967.
