GUATEMALA CITY – Authorities in Guatemala have arrested former first lady and losing presidential candidate Sandra Torres on charges of campaign finance violations.
Investigators searched her home and transported her to court Monday morning. An investigator who was not authorized to speak publicly about the case confirmed her arrest.
Torres was married to — and later divorced — former President Álvaro Colom, who governed from 2008 to 2012.
She lost the presidential election last month in a runoff to Alejandro Giammattei.
There have been allegations that campaign contributions for her Unity for Hope party were not properly registered and that some public funds may have been diverted to her presidential bid.
