iN VIDEO: Thunderstorms kept emergency crews hopping in Kamloops, Okanagan

KAMLOOPS – Thunderstorms that rolled through the Kamloops and the Okanagan last night put on quite the show, but also kept crews busy responding to fires and power outages.

Kamloops Fire Rescue Platoon Capt. Daryl Cooper says his crews responded to lightning strikes, railway fires, car accidents and even people trapped in elevators.

“We responded to several lightning strikes, one on Ord Road, one on Saddleback,” Cooper says. “A couple of them were on the C.N. track but I think they were caused by grinding.”

The power went out in various Kamloops neighbourhoods, according to B.C. Hydro.

“We had two elevator rescues, people stuck in elevators and we had to get them out,” Cooper says. “(We had) two rescues from (motor vehicle incidents), one on Inks Lake Road and one along the Yellowhead, so it was a busy couple hours there, it kept us busy.”

There were also lightning-caused fires reported in Kelowna and Peachland.

People from across the region captured the lightning storm with photos and video and shared them online.

Some waited to catch a strike on camera and were still caught by surprise.

Some got creative with their shots, like this person who captured various lightning strikes in slow motion.
