CIS Football Roundup: No. 1 McMaster Marauders down No. 5 Queen’s Gaels 33-20

Kyle Quinlan made sure the McMaster Marauders stayed perfect.

The fifth-year quarterback was 25-for-36 passing for 340 yards and two touchdowns and also ran in another score as No. 1 McMaster defeated the No. 5 Queen’s Gaels 33-20 in Canadian university football Saturday.

Robert Babic was Quinlan’s top target on the day, catching nine balls for 104 yards and a TD, while Ben O’Connor caught three passes for 62 yards and a touchdown for McMaster (4-0).

Brad Fochesato caught four passes for 92 yards, while Declan Cross rushed for 132 yards on 17 carriers for the defending Vanier Cup champions.

Queen’s quarterback Billy McPhee was 29-of-46 for 320 yards and touchdown for the Gaels (3-1).

Justin Chapdelaine had seven catches for 70 yards and a TD, Giovanni Aprile caught six passes for 103 yards and Ryan Granberg rushed 20 times for 103 yards and touchdown.

Elsewhere in the CIS it was: No. 3 Montreal 15, No. 10 Sherbrooke 6; No. 6 Western 46, Windsor 23; No. 8 Manitoba 51, Alberta 38; Acadia 26, Saint Mary’s 10; Mount Allison 36, St. FX 19; Guelph 31, Toronto 29; Bishop’s 38, Concordia 30; Laurier 35, Ottawa 27; and Waterloo 23, York 22.

Later on, No. 2 Calgary (3-0) met UBC (0-3).

At Hamilton, Tyler Crapigna was 4-for-4 on field goals for McMaster, which led 26-3 at halftime.

Quinlan hit Babic on a 35-yard pass to open the scoring early in the first quarter. After Queen’s kicker Dillon Wamsley connected from 42 yards out to make it 7-3, Crapigna four straight field goals to make it 19-3.

O’Connor then hauled in a 50-yard pass from Quinlan with 39 seconds left in the half to give the Marauders a 19-point edge heading to the locker-room.

Quinlan scored on a six-yard run in the third quarter before Granberg rushed from two yards for the Gaels out to make it 33-10.

After a Queen’s rouge in the fourth, Chapdelaine and McPhee hooked up on a nine-yard TD in the fourth before the Gaels rounded out the scoring after McMaster conceded a team safety with three seconds left on the clock in the fourth.

At Montreal, Rotrand Sene rushed for 109 yards and two touchdowns as the Carabins (4-0) held off Sherbrooke (2-2).

No. 6 Mustangs 46, Lancers 23

At London, Ont., Garret Sanvido rushed for 205 yards and two TDs as Western (3-1) doubled up Windsor (2-2).

No. 8 Bisons 51, Golden Bears 38

At Winnipeg, Cam Clark passed for 442 yards and four touchdowns as Manitoba (3-1) beat winless Alberta (0-4).

Axmen 26, Huskies 10

At Halifax, Kyle Graves threw for 255 yards and two touchdowns as Acadia (2-1) defeated Saint Mary’s to send the Huskies to an 0-3 start to the season.

Mounties 36, X-Men 17

At Sackville, N.B., Jordan Botel rushed for 154 yards and two touchdowns as Mount Allison (1-2) rolled past St. FX (1-2).

Gryphons 31, Varsity Blues 29

At Guelph, Ont., Rob Farquharson rushed for 83 yards and two touchdowns as the Gryphons (3-1) beat Toronto (1-3).

Gaiters 38, Stingers 30

At Lennoxville, Que., Jordan Heather threw for 211 yards and touchdown as Bishop’s (1-3) defeated Concordia (2-2).

Golden Hawks 35, Gee-Gees 27

At Ottawa, Steve Fantham threw for 218 yards and four touchdowns as Laurier (2-2) downed the Gee-Gees (0-4).

Warriors 23, Lions 22

At Toronto, Brian Chris threw for 172 yards, a touchdown and an interception as Waterloo (1-3) escaped with a narrow win over York (1-3).
