Veyre gets last shot at Olympic qualification at world boxing tourney

MONTREAL – Caroline Veyre of Montreal hopes to use the women’s world boxing championship as a ticket to the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Veyre was named Monday by Boxing Canada to an eight-woman team for the world championships May 19-27 in Astana, Kazakhstan.

The 2015 Pan Am Games gold medallist missed her first shot at making the Olympic team last month when she was beaten in the quarter-finals at a qualifying tournament in Argentina. She must finish in the top four in the 60-kilogram division in Astana to qualify for Rio.

“Since her return from Argentina, Caroline shows more intensity during her trainings and her mental preparation is on track,” team high performance director Daniel Trepanier said. “We are confident that she has all the skills necessary to be part of the world’s elite and to qualify for the Olympic Games.”

Canada hopes to have a fighter in each of the three weight classes in women’s boxing at the Olympics.

Mandy Bujold (51 kg) of Kitchener, Ont., and Ariane Fortin (75 kg) of St. Nicolas, Que., who have qualified for the Games, were also named to the world championship squad.

The world championships have eight divisions. Others on the team include Kim Clavel (48 kg) of Montreal, Erica Adjei (54 kg) of Ottawa, Sabrina Aubin (57 kg) of St-Jean-Sur- Richelieu, Que., Sara Kali ( (64) kg) of Montreal and Alison Greey (81 kg) of Toronto.

The team will have a training camp in Europe a week before the tournament.
