4 Puerto Rico policemen charged with civil rights violations

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – Four current and former police officers in Puerto Rico have been charged with civil rights violations following a 2015 police raid.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office said Thursday that the officers are accused of using excessive force and unlawfully seizing, concealing and destroying evidence related to their alleged misconduct.

Authorities said the officers are accused of hitting and using a Taser on two suspects, as well as seizing a cellphone from someone recording the alleged incident.

Puerto Rico’s Police Department is undergoing a 10-year agreement with federal authorities to reform the agency following a 2011 U.S. Department of Justice report that found widespread police misconduct that routinely violated citizens’ rights.
