Law society to vote on Trinity Western University

THOMPSON-OKANAGAN – B.C. Law Society members will vote on June 10 to decide if Trinity Western University’s recent accreditation should be overturned. 

The purpose of the meeting and vote is to determine a resolution in declaring Trinity Western University as an unapproved faculty of law for the purposes of the Law Society’s admission program.

The Christian university’s admission policy for its law school has been under scrutiny nation-wide – applicants must sign a covenant abstaining from heterosexual intimacy. Critics have deemed the covenant inappropriate and discriminatory against gays and lesbians; it cites pre-marital sex as a violation of marriage between a man and woman.

Last month, administrators announced the university will launch lawsuits – stating the criticism threatens freedom of religion.

The meeting begins at 12:30 p.m. Lawyers are allowed to vote until 6 p.m.
