2 suspects arrested in shooting that wounded 2 NYC plainclothes officers responding to robbery

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Police arrested two people Tuesday in the shooting of two New York City plainclothes police officers responding to a grocery store robbery, authorities said.

The shooting occurred around 10:30 p.m. Monday. The officers were coming off their shift when they and three other plainclothes officers responded to the robbery report.

One suspect was captured Tuesday, about 12 hours after the shooting in the Bronx. Another turned up at the hospital with a gunshot wound in his arm and doctors notified police.

Charges are pending.

The officers were coming off their shift Monday night when they responded to a report of a grocery store robbery. They approached suspects at a Chinese restaurant. The shooter opened fire from inside the restaurant, and police fired back.

“They went above and beyond the call to protect their fellow New Yorkers. Thank God the officers are doing well and will recover,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said at the hospital where the officers are recovering.

The shooting came about two weeks after two officers were fatally shot while sitting in their patrol car in Brooklyn, and on the same day that the city touted record low crime levels.

Those death of the two officers raised tensions between police and de Blasio. Police unions said the mayor has stoked anti-police sentiment by supporting protests against the police killings of unarmed black men in New York and Missouri.
