The Latest: CHP calls off search for suspect in I-15 pursuit

BAKER, Calif. – The Latest on a police pursuit and standoff on Interstate 15 in the Mojave Desert (all times local):

3 p.m.

Police say they’ve called off a search for a suspect they say shot at officers during a car chase before a standoff that shut down Interstate 15 in the Mojave Desert for hours.

California Highway Patrol Officer Adam Carmichall says Friday afternoon that “all leads have gone cold” in the search for the suspect near the California-Nevada border.

A CHP officer had tried to stop a speeding car early Friday morning but the driver refused to pull over. Carmichall said the suspect fired at police during a short pursuit before stopping on a median.

After a seven-hour standoff, police approached the car and found it unoccupied.

All lanes of the interstate were reopened Friday afternoon. It’s the main route across the Mojave Desert for travel between Southern California cities and Las Vegas.
