Stampeders running back Jon Cornish joins CFL’s 1,000-yard Canadian club

CALGARY – Calgary Stampeders running back Jon Cornish became the eighth Canadian in CFL history to rush for 1,000 yards in a season Friday.

The 27-year-old from New Westminster, B.C., passed that mark with a 73-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter against the Edmonton Eskimos.

The CFL’s rushing leader needed just 53 yards in the game to join Norm Kwong, Gerry James, Ron Stewart, Bob Swift, Orville Lee, Sean Millington and Jerome Messam as other Canadians to run for 1,000.

Messam, a Brampton, Ont., native who plays for the Eskimos, compiled 1,057 in 2011.
