Toronto Argonauts re-sign King to extension but release veteran Carter
TORONTO – The Toronto Argonauts returned a key element of their offensive line while giving the lone remaining defensive starter from their 100th Grey Cup-winning squad an early start to free agency.
The Argos re-signed international offensive lineman Jarriel King to a contract extension Tuesday. King was scheduled to become a free agent Feb. 10.
So was defensive back Jalil Carter, who started last season as the lone returnee from the Toronto defence that anchored the club’s 35-22 win over Calgary in the 100th Grey Cup game in 2012 at Rogers Centre. Carter joined the Argos in ’12 and appeared in 34 regular-season games, two playoff contests and the historic championship encounter.
King joined the Argos prior to the ’13 season and started 13 games at right tackle as a rookie. He appeared in 11 contest, making nine starts, last year mostly at right guard.
“Jarriel brings a good combination of size and athleticism to our offensive line and he has shown his versatility by starting games at guard and tackle,” GM Jim Barker said in a statement. “We look forward to watching him continue to develop with us in Toronto.”
