BC SPCA investigating Kelowna cat killing

KELOWNA – Julie Grace Fidler was taking her usual route to work at around 9:40 a.m. Monday, Sept. 23, when she came upon a gruesome sight.

“I found a kitten laying on the ground, with a string around its neck and a small tack at the end of the string,” Fidler said.

“It was a very small kitten.”

She had just given a statement to the RCMP when she spoke with iNFOnews.ca and they told her they’d be looking into the incident. B.C. SPCA is investigating, as well.

City crews have since removed the kitten from the alleyway between Ponto and McIntosh Roads, and say they've not seen an increase of such incidents in the area, but Fidler said that she won’t soon be retracing her steps.

“It was a pretty upsetting workday,” she said. “I have two outdoor cats myself, so it’s really frightening.”

Fidler also said that it’s just the latest in a long line of strange occurrences in the area.

SPCA will be investigation the kitten's killing.

“We received a call about this case this morning and the kitten’s body is now in our custody,” said Brian Kijowski, BC SPCA regional manager of cruelty investigations for the Interior/Okanagan.

“We will be sending the body for a necropsy to determine the cause of death. We are in the early stages of the investigation but we urge anyone with any information about this case to please call our provincial Call Centre at 1-855-622-7722.
