Romania: President seeks health service plan after scandal

BUCHAREST, Romania – Romania’s president has ordered an action plan for the country’s beleaguered health service following public outrage over the use of diluted disinfectants in Romanian hospitals.

President Klaus Iohannis said Friday the government will implement new procedures and verification methods by July to ensure better controls at hospitals and reduce hospital superbugs.

The president’s announcement came after pharmaceutical company Hexi Pharma was indicted on charges that disinfectants it provided to hospitals and Romania’s troops in Afghanistan were highly diluted and ineffective.

The company’s CEO, Dan Condrea, died after his car slammed into a tree on Sunday. Prosecutors are investigating his death.
