Apollo Theater to hold auditions in New Orleans, on Internet

New York’s famed Apollo Theater is taking its Amateur Night talent competition to New Orleans and to the Internet.

The Apollo will hold auditions at New Orleans’ Essence Festival this Friday and Saturday.

A separate online contest will take place from July 11 to Aug. 5.

One winner will be chosen from New Orleans and four from video submissions based on online voting. The winners will compete at a special edition of the Apollo’s Amateur Night on Sept. 21.

The auditions are open to singers age 18 or over.

Amateur Night has taken place at the Apollo in Harlem since 1934. It has helped to launch the careers of stars such as Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Jimi Hendrix.
