Art philanthropist may have found a home for his collection in Whistler museum

VANCOUVER – Canadian art philanthropist Michael Audain may have found a home for his extensive collection, including works by Emily Carr and West Coast First Nations.

The Audain Foundation and the Resort Municipality of Whistler are negotiating for the creation of a world-class art museum to house the indigenous and contemporary West Coast art and paintings from artists such as Diego Rivera and Edward J. Hughes.

Audain says he and his wife have been looking for a place where his collection could be exhibited on a permanent basis for the public’s enjoyment.

Whistler Mayor Nancy Wilhelm-Morden says they’re considering a home for the art on a large piece of land across the street from Whistler’s municipal hall.

Wilhelm-Mordan says Whistler has a long-term plan to increase its facilities for arts and culture, so they’re thrilled that the foundation may select her community for a museum.

The museum would be finance privately and Audian says no dollar figure has been announced for the construction of the building.
