Brazilians Gilberto and Jackson to miss start of Toronto FC training camp

TORONTO – Toronto FC will be without Brazilians Gilberto and Jackson when it opens training camp Monday.

Gilberto is remaining in Brazil while the MLS team resolves its logjam at designated player. Teams are currently allowed three and Toronto will be at four when Sebastian Giovinco arrives to join Michael Bradley, Jozy Altidore and Gilberto.

Giovinco is scheduled to arrive in July once his contract with Juventus expires. But there have been rumblings the Italian star could come sooner.

A club spokesman said Gilberto, a forward, will stay in Brazil while the club works on roster rules pertaining to his status.

The case of Jackson is simpler. The midfielder’s wife is expecting so the club gave him permission to stay with her.
