LONDON – Real Madrid took charge of the Champions League’s toughest group thanks to a hat trick from star forward Cristiano Ronaldo, while AC Milan kick-started its campaign with a rare away win at Zenit St. Petersburg.
Ronaldo scored his second straight three-goal haul to earn Madrid a 4-1 victory at Ajax in Group D, with Karim Benzema grabbing the other for the Spanish champions from an amazing overhead kick.
Manchester City is languishing on just one point from two games in that group after escaping with a 1-1 draw with Borussia Dortmund courtesy of Mario Balotelli’s late penalty.
Milan required a late own goal to seal a 3-2 win at Zenit in Group C to be two points behind Malaga, which won 3-0 over Anderlecht.
Arsenal and FC Porto also have 100 per cent starts after wins Wednesday.
