Coroner identifies man killed in RCMP-involved shooting in Castlegar, B.C.

CASTLEGAR, B.C. – The coroners service has identified a man who was fatally shot by police in Castlegar, B.C.

Thirty-nine-year-old Waylon Edey of Yahk was killed following an encounter with RCMP officers near a bridge on Highway 3.

Mounties have said officers responded to a complaint of a possible impaired driver last Thursday and attempted to stop him.

They say an officer left his patrol car and fired on the man, who was transported to hospital but died a short time later.

RCMP have not provided further details about what happened as the province’s police watchdog is investigating.

The Independent Investigations Office has said a five-member team, including a forensic specialist, travelled to Castlegar.
