Sam Smith wins Grammy Award for best new artist

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Sam Smith has won the Grammy for best new artist.
The soulful British artist broke through this past year with his hit “Stay With Me,” which captured the sound of his moody album “In The Lonely Hour.” He recently awarded Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne with songwriter credits for “Stay With Me” because of its similarity to Petty’s hit “I Won’t Back Down.”
He competed for the Grammy with Iggy Azalea; Bastille; Brandy Clark and HAIM.
