Some of the most active companies traded Tuesday on the Toronto Stock Exchange:

Canadian Oil Sands Ltd. (TSX:COS). Oil and gas. Down 47 cents, or 4.07 per cent, to $11.08 on 7.5 million shares.

Legacy Oil + Gas Inc. (TSX:LEG). Oil and gas. Down 26 cents, or 10.92 per cent, to $2.12 on 5.4 million shares.

Penn West Petroleum Ltd. (TSX:PWT). Oil and gas. Down eight cents, or 2.41 per cent, to $3.24 on 5.2 million shares.

Romarco Minerals Inc. (TSX:R). Miner. Up one cent, or 1.75 per cent, to 58 cents on five million shares.

Pacific Rubiales Energy Corp. (TSX:PRE). Oil and gas. Down 81 cents, or 16.43 per cent, to $4.12 on 4.7 million shares.

Rio Alto Mining Ltd. (TSX:RIO). Miner. Down five cents, or 1.37 per cent, to $3.60 on 4.6 million shares.

Companies reporting major news:

Talisman Energy (TSX:TLM). Oil and gas. Up 18 cents, or 1.91 per cent, to $9.59 on 1.8 million shares. The company, which expects to be taken over soon by Spain’s Repsol SA,posted a quarterly US$1.59-billion net loss, mostly as a result of asset writedowns related to the collapse in oil prices.
