Fishermen catch huge rainbow trout where they didn’t expect it

Most people know Skaha Lake in Penticton for the beaches, but after a big catch last weekend, it might soon be better known for the fishing.

Sue Austin of Penticton posted a photo on a Penticton Facebook page of a whopping 18-pound, 33-inch-long rainbow trout caught by a friend of hers while fishing Skaha Lake on the weekend.

She says feathers were used for bait.

A video of the catch was posted Oct. 14 to the Backing Boys YouTube website which is billed as "just a bunch of friends based out of the Okanagan who fish B.C. and laugh along the way."

One of the Backing Boys, who identifies himself only as Shawn in the video, was pretty excited to scoop the giant trout out of the water, thinking at first it was only a few pounds.

Shawn took photos and weighed his exceptional catch before releasing it back into Skaha Lake.

He said it was the first time he's fished the lake.

According to the B.C. Ministry of Environment, Rainbow trout are typically two to 15 pounds.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
