Winner of NPR’s 1st Tiny Desk Concert Contest: California-based project Fantastic Negrito

WASHINGTON – NPR is announcing the winner of its first Tiny Desk Concert Contest.

For two months, NPR has been running the contest for bands and musicians to win a chance to gain wider exposure. NPR says more than 7,000 video entries were submitted from all 50 states, with performances recorded at a desk of the artists’ choosing.

On Thursday, the judges announced that the winner is Oakland, California-based music project Fantastic Negrito, with a performance recorded in a freight elevator. Fantastic Negrito will perform a Tiny Desk Concert at NPR in March.

NPR has been presenting its Tiny Desk Concerts since 2008, drawing well-known musicians including Adele, Yo-Yo Ma and John Legend. This marks the series’ first contest.

Performances are recorded at an office desk for NPR Music and featured online.
