Most actively traded companies on the TSX

Some of the most active companies traded Thursday on the Toronto Stock Exchange:

Toronto Stock Exchange (15,228.52, up 77.02 points):

Bombardier Inc. (TSX:BBD.B). Aerospace, rail equipment. Down 35 cents, or 11.51 per cent, to $2.69 on 40.8 million shares. The company posted a $1.59-billion fourth-quarter loss and suspend it dividend as it adjusts to the soaring cost of its much-delayed CSeries passenger jet. Meanwhile, president and CEO Pierre Beaudoin is stepping down as president and CEO to take over as chairman from his father, who is retiring.

Manulife Financial Corp. (TSX:MFC). Insurance. Down 51 cents, or 2.34 per cent, to $21.33 on 9.6 million shares. Its core earnings were 36 cents per diluted share, five cents below estimates.

Sun Life Financial Inc. (TXS:SLF). Insurance. Down $2.73, or 6.51 per cent, to $39.23 on 5.7 million shares. The company’s net income on an adjusted basis came in at $360 million or 59 cents per share, missing estimates of 78 cents per share.

Bellatrix Exploration Ltd. (TSX:BXE). Oil and gas. Up 12 cents, or 3.65 per cent, to $3.41 on 5.5 million shares.

Surge Energy Inc. (TSX:SGY). Oil and gas. Up 10 cents, or 3.10 per cent, to $3.33 on 5.3 million shares.

Companies reporting major news:

Cenovus Energy (TSX:CVE). Oil and gas. Down five cents, or 0.20 per cent, to $24.63 on 2.4 million shares. The company expects to cut its workforce by about 15 per cent, with the bulk of the cuts coming from contractors. Oil companies have scrambled to cut costs as prices have slid about 40 per cent since late November amid a huge supply/demand imbalance.

Telus Corp. (TSX:T). Telecommunications. Down one cent, or 0.02 per cent, to $43.53 on two million shares. Fourth-quarter profit increased 7.6 per cent from a year ago to $312 million, helped by growth in its wireless business. Adjusted earnings were 53 cents, in line with estimates.
