Ethel Smyth’s ‘The Wreckers’ to get US staged premiere at Bard SummerScape festival
ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – Ethel Smyth’s “The Wreckers,” a century-old opera about a Cornish fishing village whose residents plunder ships, will be given its U.S. staged premiere at the annual Bard SummerScape festival.
Composed from 1902-04 with a French libretto by Henry Brewster, “The Wreckers” debuted at Leipzig, Germany, in 1906.
The American Symphony Orchestra will be conducted by Leon Botstein, who conducted the work’s American debut at New York’s Lincoln Center in 2007. Thaddeus Strassberger will stage the opera, which will be sung in English, with five performances from July 24-Aug. 1.
Bard said Tuesday there will be 25 performances of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Oklahoma!” at the LUMA Theater from June 25-July 19. The Bard Music Festival also includes “Chavez and His World,” focusing on Mexican composer Carlos Chavez.
