His fault: John Green admits that fan created popular quote attributed to him

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The fault, John Green admits, is with himself.

The million-selling young adult author acknowledges in a recent YouTube video that a quote attributed to him is not his. The quote appeared all over the Internet and even on a poster Green had been selling.

The quote, “I’m in love with cities I’ve never been to and people I’ve never met,” was supposedly from Green’s novel “Paper Towns.” It originated in 2009 with a fan, Melody Truong, and Green says, “I stole it! I am the thief.”

Green says he has agreed to share royalties from the poster with Truong. He says he often forgets what’s in his books and when he heard others credit the quote to him, he assumed it was true.
