National Gallery of Canada Foundation sets Biennale endowment with donation

OTTAWA – The Donald R. Sobey Family Foundation has donated $2 million to the National Gallery of Canada Foundation to establish the Canadian Artists in Venice Endowment.

The endowment will provide financial support to artists representing Canada at the Venice Biennale art exhibition in Venice, Italy.

The gallery says it’s now hoping to attract other philanthropic partners for the endowment.

A major space in the gallery will be named after the Sobey family in recognition of the gift, which is an “unprecedented” move, according to a gallery foundation press release.

The National Gallery of Canada Foundation is a not-for-profit registered charity that supports the gallery in Ottawa.

The Donald R. Sobey Family Foundation is named after Donald Sobey, chair emeritus of Empire Company Limited, which owns the Sobeys supermarket chain.
