Police say Panthers QB Cam Newton not a person of interest after weekend shooting at nightclub

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department spokesman Rob Tufano says Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is not a person of interest following a weekend shooting at a Charlotte nightclub.

According to the police report, two people sustained non-life-threatening injuries Saturday night after gunshots were fired at Label nightclub.

WSOC-TV in Charlotte published photos and video Tuesday night that showed Newton on stage with Young Jeezy — one of the rappers scheduled to perform at the party — before gunshots sent people ducking to the ground and fleeing for the exits.

The CIAA basketball tournament was in Charlotte last week, but the conference released a statement Sunday saying the party wasn’t a sanctioned event.

The Panthers declined comment on the incident.

Police say no arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.
