B.C. teen who disappeared during field trip hike found after night in woods
TOFINO, B.C. – RCMP say a 14-year-old girl who disappeared during a hike while on a class trip on Vancouver Island has been found safe.
Sgt. Jeff Swann says the girl is alert and able to speak to rescuers after spending the night in a remote area north of Tofino on the west coast of the island.
The teen, who is from the nearby First Nations community of Ahousaht, was out for a hike on Tuesday but was separated from the group at some point.
Students were hiking in a heavily forested area near Bedwell Sound, which is about a 40-minute boat ride from Ahousaht.
The air and ground search involved the RCMP, the coast guard, several search-and-rescue teams from the region and about 100 volunteers from Ahousaht.
