Woman with dementia found dead on B.C. roadside likely froze to death: police
MERRITT, B.C. – Police say a 73-year-old woman with dementia travelled 70 kilometres before dying on a remote roadside near Merritt, B.C.
RCMP believe Barbara Derenowski froze to death after her truck got stuck on an unplowed road and she got out and started walking.
Her body was found by some anglers who were driving to a lake on Wednesday afternoon.
Mounties believe Derenowski was last seen alive when a care worker dropped her off at her home in Enderby on Monday afternoon.
Because she lived alone, it is not known when Derenowski got into her truck and drove away.
Police say she was wearing light clothing and did not have a valid driver’s license.
