WASHINGTON – Ben Platt will star in the new musical “Dear Evan Hansen” debuting this summer at Washington’s Arena Stage.

The theatre announced casting plans Monday for the musical from composers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul and playwright Steven Levenson.

Platt is best known for starring in “Pitch Perfect” and will reprise his role in “Pitch Perfect 2.” He recently made his Broadway debut in “The Book of Mormon.”

“Dear Evan Hansen” is a contemporary story about hope and heartache after a private letter accidentally goes viral online. The show is directed by Michael Greif, whose credits include “If/Then,” ”Next to Normal” and “Rent.”

The musical, running July 10 to Aug. 23, is being produced with New York’s Stacey Mindich Productions. Producers hope to take the show to Broadway after its debut.
